Elani Spencer ’27, a first-year student who hails from Rochester, New York, earned the title through a competition sponsored by the 罗阿诺克艺术委员会 in partnership with Roanoke Public Libraries and 灵魂会议罗阿诺克. 该计划欢迎年龄在13至19岁之间的青年诗人，他们具有公民意识，并通过他们的表演和对社会的承诺来证明他们的作品质量。

The Roanoke Youth Poet Laureate program is part of the 国家青年桂冠诗人计划 founded by Urban Word to celebrate youth at the intersection of artistic excellence and civic engagement. Locally, the effort is funded by the 罗阿诺克艺术委员会 through the City’s Percent for Art Program and was developed through the 2022-23 艺术家年 program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Led by Soul Sessions’ Bryan “Harvest Blaque” Hancock and Roanoke City Public Schools’ 2022 Teacher of the Year, Adria Cintron, summer “Teen Speak” workshops built to a culminating presentation of poetry submissions at 节奏与韵律, a component of the Roanoke Public Libraries Melrose Fall Festival in October 2023.
